After graduating, he began his career in private practice at a local defense-focused law firm in Baton Rouge. He then moved on to serve as a term law clerk for Chief Judge Shelly Dick at the United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana for two years, where he gained invaluable insight into the workings of federal courts.
