What is Louisiana Med Pay Coverage?

While liability insurance is required in the state of Louisiana, Louisiana med pay coverage is optional, and so most car owners either choose not to buy it, or they may not even know it exists. But Louisiana med pay is an inexpensive way to recover medical expenses after a Louisiana car accident.

What is Louisiana Med Pay?

Louisiana med pay is a form of insurance coverage that covers all medical expenses that result from a collision. This covers all of the occupants in the policy holder’s car, up to the limit of the med pay insurance. This coverage takes effect regardless of which party was at fault for causing the accident. A key benefit in this type of coverage is that everyone on the liability policy will be covered, and even if in another person’s car. Really? In another person’s car? That is correct. Louisiana med pay coverage will cover everyone who is named on the liability insurance policy, even when they are in another person’s car. This means that if one of the insured is in a collision while in a friend’s car, the coverage will still kick in. If the friend has Louisiana med pay coverage as well, then the injured passenger will first collect the damages from the friend’s insurance policy. And in serious cases, if more compensation is needed to cover all of your medical expenses than exists in a single policy, you may be able to recover from both insurance policies. For example, if you are covered by Louisiana med pay, and you are in an accident in a friend’s car, and your friend has med pay coverage up to $1,000, then you may recover that amount of damages from the friend’s insurance policy. But if your medical bills exceed $1,000, you may also recover damages from your own insurance policy. In this instance your policy will act as a secondary to your friend’s Louisiana med pay coverage.

Losing my own brother, then my father and sister after long, disabling illnesses just a few months apart drove a career change for me. Before that experience, I never truly understood the place you’re in. I never understood the dramatic impact that receiving (or not receiving) the disability and life insurance benefits you paid for and counted on can have on your life especially when you need to focus on family and healing. What I experienced with my own family now drives the way I view my clients and my work, and I will never forget it!
