In recent news, more than 70 passengers that were aboard the Asiana Airlines flight that crashed in San Francisco two years ago have reached a settlement with the airlines. According to the court documents, 72 passengers filed personal injury claims against Boeing Co., which made the airplane, and Air Cruisers Co., a New Jersey company that makes evacuation slides for airplanes.
As is normally the case with settlements, the exact financial terms of this settlement are confidential. This recent development is puts to rest the first set of lawsuits stemming from the San Francisco crash. he said. There are dozens of additional cases still pending that involve 70 plaintiffs additional in Northern California federal court.
The Asiana Flight 214 crash killed three people and left approximately 200 people injured in July of 2013 and was one of the worst seen in recent times. The Boeing 777 yet was traveling from South Korea when it slammed into a seawall. Chaos ensued when the plane hit the seawall at the end of a runway during final approach to San Francisco International Airport. The horrific impact of the crash ripped off the back of the plane, ejected three flight attendants, and broke apart pieces of the jet before it skidded to a stop.
Safety investigators blamed the Asiana pilots, claiming that the problems started with the landing approach and continued with multiple additional errors. The National Transportation Safety Board also weighed in on the accident and said the complexity of the Boeing 777’s auto-throttle and auto flight director contributed to the severity of the accident. The NTSB also ruled that Chicago-based Boeing, fail to make clear the conditions regarding some of the plane’s equipment.
According to insiders, the passengers who settled had injuries that were less serious and have stabilized since the accident. 14 of the people who settled were minors, requiring the court to approve the agreements prior to official agreement of the settlement. Many of the plane’s passengers where young students who are now dealing with pretty serious psychological issues due to the severity of the crash and the bungled rescue efforts after.
The remaining cases are set to work their way through the court system in upcoming months. Due to the nature of the case and the findings, the monetary awards are sure to be large for the remaining cases.
